About Movember and No-Shave November
Movember began in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003, when a small group of friends decided to bring the moustache back into fashion for a month and tie it to a cause. In 2004 they formed the Movember Foundation and began raising money for men’s health. The campaign has since spread to more than 20 countries and funds work on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
Every November participants start clean-shaven on November 1 and grow a moustache for the month, raising donations from friends, family and colleagues. In 2027, as every year, the campaign runs through November 30. No-Shave November is a separate campaign with a similar idea, in which participants skip shaving and donate what they would have spent on grooming to cancer charities.
Police and fire departments have become some of the most visible supporters. Many agencies relax grooming rules for the month for officers who donate, and some sell a special moustache patch or shirt, with proceeds going to a cancer charity or a colleague who is ill. Those patches have become collectors’ items in their own right.
