About Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the United States, recognized by presidential proclamation since 2012. It draws attention to the children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer each year, to their families and to the research and care that have greatly improved survival over the past fifty years.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer remains a leading cause of death from disease among children in the United States, even though most children diagnosed today survive at least five years. Advocates use the month to raise money for research, to support families during treatment and to highlight the long-term effects many survivors live with.

The symbol of the month is the gold ribbon. Schools, teams and police and fire departments go gold in September, and many sell gold ribbon patches to raise money for children’s hospitals and research foundations. Teams wear them on uniforms and families add them to jackets and bags in honor of a child.
