Iron-on backing transformed patch application from a specialized tailoring task into something anyone could do at home with a household iron, and this accessibility is the entire reason iron-on patches became synonymous with DIY fashion in the 1960s and 70s. The backing is a thermoplastic adhesive film — typically polyamide — that melts at the press temperatures we recommend — 300–320°F (150–160°C) — and bonds to textile fibers as it cools. The result, when applied correctly to a compatible fabric, is a strong mechanical and chemical bond that integrates the patch into the garment rather than simply resting on top of it. The key distinction from sew-on patches is permanence: iron-on patches are not meant to be removed without damaging either the patch or the garment, which makes them ideal for casual fashion and uniforms where permanence is a feature, not a drawback.

Care & Maintenance
After applying an iron-on patch, wait at least 24 hours before washing to allow the adhesive bond to fully cure. Machine wash inside-out in cold water, and avoid wringing or twisting the garment around the patch. High-heat drying is the primary cause of iron-on patch delamination, so either tumble dry on low or lay flat to dry, particularly for the first several wash cycles.
