How to apply an iron-on patch

Our heat-seal backing bonds with an ordinary household iron. It takes under a minute per patch — the whole job is getting the heat, the time and the fabric right.

Step by step

Six steps, about a minute of work per patch.

  1. Heat the iron and skip the steam

    Set the iron to roughly 300–320°F (150–160°C) — on most irons that is the cotton setting. Turn steam OFF and empty the reservoir if it drips. Moisture works against the adhesive, which needs dry heat to melt and flow into the fibres. Let the iron come fully up to temperature before you start.

  2. Press the garment flat first

    Give the area a quick pass on its own to flatten wrinkles and drive off any moisture. A patch pressed over a crease bonds over that crease, and the edge lifts there first. Work on a hard, flat surface — an ironing board is fine, a bed or a folded towel is not, because the padding absorbs the pressure you are trying to apply.

  3. Position the patch, then cover it

    Place the patch exactly where you want it, adhesive side down. Once it bonds it is not coming off without damaging the patch or the garment, so check the placement twice. Then lay a thin cotton cloth or pressing cloth over the top — it spreads the heat evenly and keeps the iron plate off the embroidery thread.

  4. Press firmly for 15–20 seconds

    Press straight down with firm, steady weight and hold for 15 to 20 seconds. Do NOT slide the iron back and forth. Movement shifts the patch while the adhesive is molten and pumps the heat unevenly; pressure and stillness are what make the bond. Lean on it — this is more force than ordinary ironing.

  5. Turn the garment inside out and press from the back

    For a noticeably stronger bond, flip the garment inside out and press the reverse of the patch area for another 10 to 15 seconds, again through the cloth. Heat reaching the adhesive from the fabric side pulls it into the weave rather than just onto the surface.

  6. Let it cool completely before you test it

    The adhesive sets as it cools, so the bond is at its weakest while the patch is still warm. Leave it alone until it is cool to the touch, then run a fingernail around the edge. If a corner lifts, cover and press that spot again for another 10–15 seconds.

Which fabrics take an iron-on

Heat-seal backing needs a fabric that can take 300°F+ without melting, glazing or shrinking. That rules more out than most people expect.

Press with confidence

Sew these instead

Heat-sensitive or coated materials. The iron can melt, glaze, shrink or discolour them, and the adhesive often will not hold anyway. Sewing the patch on is the safe answer — and every patch we make can be sewn.

Test one piece first

Two garments that look identical can behave differently under an iron — dye, coating, blend ratio and age all change how fabric reacts to heat. Before you press a run of patches onto uniforms or event shirts, do one. Check the bond, check the fabric around it for shine or scorch, and only then do the rest.

Where an iron-on works well

Flat, heat-tolerant panels are ideal. Curved or heavily flexed surfaces — cap fronts especially — hold up better sewn on, and anything leather or coated should be sewn whatever its shape.

After it is on

Wait 24 hours before the first wash

The bond keeps curing after it cools. Give it a day before the garment goes anywhere near a machine.

Cold water, inside out

Wash the garment turned inside out on a cold cycle. Skip the wringing and twisting around the patch.

Low heat or air dry

High-heat drying is the single most common cause of an iron-on lifting. Tumble on low or lay flat, especially for the first several washes.

Re-press if an edge lifts

A lifting corner is not a failed patch. Cover it and press again at the same setting for 10–15 seconds, then let it cool.

Stitch the border for uniforms

On anything laundered hard and often — work wear, sports kit, uniforms — a row of stitching around the border on top of the adhesive will outlast the garment.

If something goes wrong

The patch did not stick at all

Almost always not enough heat, not enough time, or not enough pressure. Check the iron actually reached temperature, turn steam off, work on a hard flat surface rather than a padded one, and press straight down hard for the full 15–20 seconds. If the fabric is nylon or a coated shell, the adhesive will not bond to it — sew it on instead.

The edges lift after a wash or two

Usually heat from the dryer. Switch to low heat or air drying and re-press the lifted area. If the garment is laundered frequently, add a row of stitching around the border — the adhesive holds the patch in place while you sew, and the stitching carries the load from then on.

There is a shiny mark on the fabric

The iron plate touched the fabric directly at too high a heat and glazed it. That is what the pressing cloth prevents. Drop the temperature a little, always press through a cloth, and on a delicate or dark garment test on a hidden area first.

The patch shifted while I was pressing

The iron was moved during the press. Once the adhesive is molten the patch floats on it. Press straight down and hold still — no back-and-forth ironing motion at any point.

The garment scorched or shrank

The fabric could not take the heat. Stop and sew the remaining patches. This is exactly what the single-piece test is for.
