About Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Awareness Month in the United States, and many organizations now call it Autism Acceptance Month. The observance dates to the early 1970s, when the Autism Society, founded in 1965, began holding a national awareness week. In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, first observed in 2008.

The month aims to increase understanding of autism, a developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction and behavior in many different ways, and to promote inclusion at school, at work and in the community. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1 in 31 children in the United States has been identified with autism.

Symbols matter in this community. The puzzle piece, first used in the 1960s, is still common, but many autistic people prefer the rainbow infinity symbol or the color gold, so designs should be chosen with the local community. Police and fire departments have become visible supporters, with many selling autism awareness patches each April to raise money for local programs and training.
