Military Patch Maker: Design Unit Patches Free

Design Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force unit patches free with AI, subdued or full color, with hook backing. No minimum.

Design Free with AI

Military patches occupy a unique place in American material culture - they mark units, deployments, ranks, and individual acts of service that no certificate or citation can fully capture. Morale patches in particular have become a form of unofficial expression within military culture, allowing service members to display unit humor, call signs, and hard-earned identity in a way that official insignia cannot. Veterans continue wearing and collecting patches long after their service ends, using them to connect with brothers- and sisters-in-arms at reunions and memorial events. The technical requirements are demanding: precise color matching to regulation standards, Velcro backing compatible with MOLLE and plate carrier systems, and PVC options that can survive the rigors of field use.

Unit patches for every branch

Every example below is an original design made with our AI patch generator for this page, with no official seal, emblem or insignia in it. Each one opens the designer with its prompt, so you can start from it and make it your unit's.

Subdued vs full color

Full color is for jackets, plaques, reunions and the unit store. A subdued version swaps the bright reds, blues and golds for olive drab, coyote tan, gray and black, so the patch does not stand out on a uniform or a plate carrier in the field.

Most units order both from one design: describe it once, then ask the designer for a subdued version. The color scheme does not change the price.

Hook backing

Hook-and-loop backing is the standard for plate carriers, helmets, packs and uniforms with loop panels. The hook side is sewn to the back of the patch and presses onto any loop field, so the patch swaps between garments in seconds.

Hook backing is an add-on on both embroidered and PVC patches. For a dress uniform that needs the patch stitched on for good, sew-on is the better choice.

Official insignia and licensing

The official seals, emblems and insignia of the armed forces are trademarks. Putting one on patches made for sale or for handing out generally needs a license from that branch's trademark licensing office, and we do not reproduce them without one.

Your own unit, morale, reunion and veteran designs are yours: a unit number, a motto, a mascot or a call sign needs no license, and the AI designs them free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make subdued (grey/black) versions?

Yes - subdued colorways are one of the most common requests we receive for military patches. We produce full-color patches alongside identical subdued versions, replacing vivid reds, blues, and golds with muted greys, blacks, and olive drab tones to comply with low-visibility wear requirements on tactical gear. Just specify 'subdued' when placing your order and our design team will produce a matching proof in both versions for your approval.

What backing works on tactical gear?

Velcro hook-and-loop backing is the standard for all tactical gear, plate carriers, helmets, and MOLLE systems - and it's what we recommend for any patch intended for field or duty use. We supply the hook side on the patch itself; most tactical gear already has loop panels sewn in. For patches on uniforms that need to be permanent, sew-on backing with no adhesive is preferred so the patch can be properly stitched through the uniform fabric by a tailor.

Do you make challenge coins too?

Challenge coins are not currently in our production catalog - we specialize exclusively in embroidered and PVC patches. For challenge coin production, we recommend reaching out to a dedicated coin manufacturer. That said, if you need a patch designed to commemorate the same unit, event, or memorial as a coin, we can create a companion patch in the same design language as part of the same order.
