Edit one area of your patch with AI
Drag a box over the part you want changed, say what should change, and only that area is redrawn. The lettering, the border and the rest of your design stay exactly as they were.
Open the free designerTry the selection
This is the gesture the designer uses. Drag a box on the patch and see what the AI is given to work from.
1. You draw the box

Drag across the patch to draw your own box.
2. What the AI is shown
A guide copy of your patch: the box framed, everything outside it dimmed, with the box's position written out in words as well.
3. You say what changes
Only the boxed area changes.
This page only shows the selection. The edit itself runs in the free designer.
A real edit, start to finish
The head boxed, and one sentence: "make the eagle's head gold". The head changed. The lettering, the stars, the flames and the border are the original, pixel for pixel.

How the AI patch editor works
Draw a box
Drag across the part of the patch you want changed. On a computer you drag straight on the design; on a phone, tap "Edit an area" first, then drag with your finger.
Say what should change
A small box opens beside it asking "What should change here?". Write the result you want, in plain words: "make the star gold", "change 2025 to 2026".
Only that area is redrawn
The AI makes the change inside your box. Everything outside it is put back from your original design, so the lettering, the border and the rest of the art stay exactly as they were.
Why the rest of the patch stays the same
An image model asked to change one detail usually redraws the whole picture anyway. The lettering drifts, the border picks up a new shade, a star moves a few pixels. Asking it nicely to leave everything else alone is not enough, so the editor does two things.
First, it shows the AI where. Along with your design it gets a guide copy: the same patch with everything outside your box dimmed and the box framed, plus the box's position in words. A picture pins the spot far better than a phrase like "the top-left star" on a busy design.
Second, it holds the AI to it. When the new version comes back, everything outside your box is restored from your original design, lined up to the pixel and blended along a narrow seam at the box's edge. Outside the box, what you see is your original patch, not a redrawing of it.
What to use it for
Recolor one element
Turn a single star gold, a flag navy, or one ribbon red without the palette of the whole patch shifting.
Fix a word or a date
Box the line of text and say what it should read. The rest of the lettering is left alone.
Swap a small symbol
Replace an anchor with a compass, or a maple leaf with a pine tree, in the same spot.
Remove a stray detail
Box a smudge, an extra line or a detail you do not want and say "remove this".
Add something small
Box an empty corner and ask for a small star, a year, or a pair of initials there.
Tune one area's detail
Simplify a busy section for embroidery, or add texture to one part, without redrawing the rest.
Tips for a clean edit
- Box a little more than the element. A margin around the thing you are changing gives the AI room to blend the edge.
- One change per box. Two unrelated changes in one sentence compete. Make the first, then box the next one.
- Describe the result, not the problem. "Make the eagle's beak yellow" works better than "the beak looks wrong".
- Use Options for whole-patch changes. Patch type, shape, size and detail level change the entire patch, so they belong in Options, not in a box.
Changed your mind about the wording? The pencil beside each message you sent lets you rewrite it and redo the edit on the same design.
Questions
Is the AI patch editor free?
Yes. Designing on PatchDesign.AI is free, and an area edit is one more version of your design in the chat. Like any other edit, it counts toward the free daily design allowance.
Does an area edit change my original design?
No. The edit arrives as a new version in the chat, and every earlier version stays where it was, so you can go back to any of them or order whichever you prefer.
Why did more than my box change?
Two cases on purpose. If an Options change rode along with the edit (type, shape, size or detail), that change touches the whole patch, so the original is not pasted back over it. And if the AI recomposed the patch, so the new version no longer lines up with the old one, the result is kept as it came rather than stitched together with a visible seam. The feature is new and marked experimental in the tool.
Can I change what I asked for?
Yes. Every message you sent has a pencil beside it: change the words and the edit is redone on the same design and the same box.
Does it work on designs made from an uploaded image?
Yes. Once your logo or sketch has been turned into a patch design in the chat, you can box any part of that design and change it.
Is what I see what gets made?
The design is a preview. Every order is redrawn by our team for production and sent to you to approve before anything is made.
Make your patch, then fine-tune any part of it
Describe the patch in plain words, then box anything you want different. You can also see it in 360° with the type and backing you pick.
