About Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States and the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. The name was popularized by police in Philadelphia in the 1950s and 1960s, who used it for the heavy crowds and traffic that arrived the day after Thanksgiving, ahead of the Army-Navy football game. Retailers later recast it as the day stores moved from loss into profit, or from “red” into “black”.

Cyber Monday followed in 2005, when the National Retail Federation’s Shop.org coined the term for the Monday after Thanksgiving, when many people shopped online after returning to work. Over the next two decades online sales grew so quickly that the weekend from Thursday through Monday is now one shopping event, sometimes called Cyber Week.

In 2026 Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. For organizations that buy custom products, the weekend is also a budgeting moment: many teams use remaining year-end budget, order holiday gifts for staff and members, or stock up for the first quarter while promotions run.
