How patches are used for Veterans Day
- VFW and American Legion posts give tribute patches to members and guests at Veterans Day ceremonies and parades.
- Schools and scout troops hand out thank-you patches to veterans who visit for assemblies.
- Unit and service-era patches let a veteran show where and when they served on a vest, cap or bag.
- Businesses and police and fire departments order flag and "thank you for your service" patches for employee veterans.
Branch seals and unit insignia are protected, so we design original tribute artwork unless you hold permission to use an official mark.
The history of Veterans Day
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day. Fighting in World War I stopped at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November 11, 1918, when the armistice between the Allies and Germany took effect. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day, to be marked with parades, public meetings and a brief pause in business at 11 a.m.
Congress passed a resolution in 1926 asking for an annual observance, and an act approved on May 13, 1938 made November 11 a legal federal holiday. After World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ groups asked that the day honor veterans of all wars. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law that replaced "Armistice" with "Veterans".
The Uniform Holiday Bill of 1968 moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October starting in 1971. Many states kept November 11, and in 1975 President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the holiday to November 11 from 1978. It has been observed on that date ever since, whatever the day of the week.
Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces, living or dead. It differs from Memorial Day, which remembers those who died in service.
