Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Pink Patch Project

October has been National Breast Cancer Awareness Month since 1985, when the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries launched it to promote mammography. The pink ribbon became its symbol in the early 1990s, after it was handed out at a New York race for breast cancer survivors in 1991 and popularized by Self magazine and Evelyn Lauder in 1992.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States other than skin cancer. Early detection and better treatment have greatly improved survival, and the month is used to encourage screening and to raise money for research and patient support.

Police and fire departments have become some of the most visible supporters through the Pink Patch Project, which began in 2013 at the Irwindale Police Department in California. Agencies design pink versions of their shoulder patches, officers wear them during October and sell them to collectors and the public, and the proceeds go to breast cancer charities.
