How patches are used for L.E.A.D.
- Thin Blue Line thank-you patches that schools, businesses and civic groups give to officers.
- Department appreciation patches for an awards breakfast.
- Community patches for kids who visit the station that day.
- Trade patches for officers who collect.
We design original artwork. Badges and agency shoulder patches belong to the agency, so we need its approval to reproduce one.
About National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, often called L.E.A.D., is observed every January 9. It was first held in 2015, organized by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) together with other law enforcement support organizations, at a time when many officers felt their work was misunderstood. The idea was simple: give communities one day each year to say thank you to the people who answer their calls.
The day is not a federal holiday, and most observances are local and informal. People wear blue, post messages of support, and drop off cards, meals or coffee at their local police department or sheriff’s office. Schools and scout troops write letters, businesses offer discounts, and some cities hold short ceremonies or recognize officers for service.
Because January 9 comes so soon after the holidays, groups that want something to hand out usually plan it in November and December. Thank-you patches are a natural fit: they cost little per piece at volume, they can be made in the agency’s own colors, and officers often keep them, trade them or add them to a patch board.
