About Peace Officers Memorial Day

Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15, honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. It was established by a law signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, the same law that created National Police Week, and the president issues a proclamation every year.

By law, the flag of the United States is flown at half-staff on all federal buildings on May 15, and many states and communities do the same. The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service is held that day at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., where the names of officers who died the previous year are read and their families are honored.

Across the country, agencies hold their own ceremonies: roll calls of the fallen, wreath layings, last-call radio broadcasts and moments of silence. End-of-watch memorial patches, often worn with a black mourning band, are a common way for an agency to honor a colleague and for families and survivors to keep that memory close.
