About National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week honors the 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers who answer emergency calls and send police, fire and EMS to them. It is held each year during the second full week of April. The observance began in 1981 at the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, where Patricia Anderson organized a week to recognize dispatch staff, and it was later recognized by Congress and promoted nationally by APCO International.

Telecommunicators are often called the first of the first responders. They take the call, calm the caller, give medical or safety instructions and coordinate the response, usually without ever seeing the scene. Their work is demanding and largely invisible, which is why the week is about making it visible.

Centers celebrate with meals, awards, themed days and gifts from the agencies they support. The thin gold line has become the recognized symbol of dispatchers, and patches and shirts in black and gold are among the most popular items during the week, worn on uniforms, jackets and bags and traded between centers.
