About International Firefighters’ Day
International Firefighters’ Day is observed on May 4. It began in 1999, after five volunteer firefighters were killed when a wind change trapped their crew in a bushfire near Linton, Victoria, Australia, in December 1998. A proposal circulated by email to honor firefighters worldwide quickly gained support, and May 4 was chosen because it is the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
The day recognizes the sacrifices of firefighters and thanks them for their service. Its symbol is a ribbon in red and blue, standing for fire and water, and many departments hold ceremonies, ring bells or sound sirens at noon in memory of those who have died in the line of duty.
In the fire service, patches carry identity. Shoulder patches show a department, crews and companies have their own designs, and the Maltese cross appears on badges and helmet shields. Tribute patches made for May 4 are worn on station uniforms and caps and traded between departments around the world.
