About National Police Week
National Police Week dates to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a law designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week that contains it as Police Week. It honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and recognizes the service of those who continue to serve. In 2027 the week runs from Sunday, May 9, to Saturday, May 15.
The center of the week is Washington, D.C. Tens of thousands of officers, survivors and supporters travel to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Judiciary Square, dedicated in 1991, where the names of fallen officers are engraved and new names are added each spring. A candlelight vigil is held at the memorial, and the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service takes place at the U.S. Capitol on May 15.
