Graduation season

Graduation ceremonies in the United States trace their caps and gowns to the medieval universities of Europe, and American colleges have held commencement since Harvard’s first in 1642. High school graduation became a common rite of passage in the twentieth century as more students finished high school.

Most high schools and colleges hold their ceremonies between mid-May and mid-June. The season is busy for families and schools: there are senior nights, awards banquets, parties and yearbook signings, and many schools give seniors something to remember the year by.

Patches have a long history in school tradition. The chenille varsity letter, worn on a letterman jacket, grew out of college athletics in the late nineteenth century and is still awarded in high schools today. Class-year patches, club and honor society patches and graduation patches for caps, jackets and bags are popular gifts, and schools often order them in bulk for the whole class.
