The Army birthday and Flag Day

June 14 marks two anniversaries. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of riflemen to serve the colonies, creating what became the United States Army, the oldest branch of the U.S. military. Two years later, on June 14, 1777, Congress adopted the first flag resolution: thirteen stripes alternating red and white, and thirteen white stars on a blue field.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916, and in 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed an act of Congress designating it National Flag Day. It is not a federal holiday, but many communities and organizations fly flags, hold ceremonies and retire worn flags. The Army celebrates its birthday with balls, cake-cutting ceremonies and events on installations around the world.

Patches for June 14 are often about the flag and about unit pride: flag patches for uniforms and gear, unit reunion patches, and Army birthday ball favors. Veterans’ groups and scout troops also use Flag Day for flag retirement ceremonies and education.
