Back to school

American schools follow a calendar that took shape in the nineteenth century, as cities and rural districts settled on a long summer break and a school year running from late summer to late spring. Today most districts start between early August and early September, with many in the South and West starting in early August and many in the Northeast after Labor Day.

The weeks before the first day are one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year, for clothing, backpacks and supplies. For schools it is a busy planning season too: clubs and teams recruit new members, booster clubs plan spirit wear sales, and teachers prepare classroom rewards.
