Summer camp sessions

Summer camp has been an American tradition since the 1880s, when the first organized camps took city children into the woods. Today millions of children attend day and overnight camps every summer, run by YMCAs, scouting councils, churches, schools, nonprofits and private owners. The American Camp Association, founded in 1910, sets standards for many of them.

Most camps open in mid-June, once schools let out, and run sessions of one to several weeks through mid-August. Each session has its own rhythm: arrival day, cabin or unit assignments, skill classes from swimming to archery, campfires, and a closing ceremony where campers are recognized.

Patches are part of camp life. Many camps award patches for completing a session, passing a swim test, learning a skill or returning for another year, and campers sew them onto jackets, bags and blankets. Cabin and unit patches, staff patches and camp-store patches are also common, and they need to be on site before the first session begins.
