The history of Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when communities decorated the graves of the war dead with flowers. On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued General Order No. 11 calling for a national day of remembrance, and the first large observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.

After World War I the day came to honor Americans who died in all wars. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved it to the last Monday in May starting in 1971, when it also became a federal holiday. In 2027 it is May 31. Since 2000, Americans have been asked to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.

Communities hold parades, ceremonies and wreath layings, volunteers place flags on graves, and many people wear red poppies, a symbol of remembrance from World War I. Remembrance patches honoring a fallen family member, friend or unit member are a personal way to carry that memory.
