The history of Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people in Texas were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect more than two years earlier, but it could not be enforced in places still under Confederate control, and Texas was among the last.

Freed people in Texas began celebrating the anniversary the next year, with gatherings, church services, food and readings of the order. Celebrations spread as families moved across the country. Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980, and on June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it a federal holiday.

Communities mark the day with festivals, parades, cookouts, history programs and concerts. Commemorative patches are popular with community organizations, churches, schools and festival committees, often in the red, black and green or the red, white and blue of the Juneteenth flag.
