The history of Father’s Day
Father’s Day in the United States began with Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was raised with her siblings by her widowed father, a Civil War veteran. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she promoted a day for fathers, and Spokane held its first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.
The idea took decades to become official. President Calvin Coolidge supported it in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation in 1966, naming the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law making it permanent in 1972. In 2027 it is June 20.
Father’s Day gifts lean practical, and caps, jackets and bags are some of the most popular. A patch on a hat or a jacket can carry a name, a joke, a favorite hobby such as fishing, hunting or golf, or a family photo, which makes it one of the easiest gifts to personalize.
