Summer camp registration season

Organized summer camp in the United States goes back to the 1880s, when the first camps took boys from cities into the woods for weeks of outdoor living. Camps spread quickly in the early twentieth century, and the American Camp Association, founded in 1910, now accredits thousands of day and overnight camps run by nonprofits, churches, YMCAs, scouting councils and private owners.

For most camps the summer is filled in winter. Many open registration in January or February, often with early-bird pricing that rewards families who sign up first, and the most popular sessions can fill within weeks. Returning campers are frequently offered priority registration in the fall or early winter.

Registration season is a marketing season. Camps use open houses, school visits and online campaigns to reach new families, and a small, kept item helps a camp stay on the fridge until the deposit is paid. A camp patch is also a promise of what is to come, since many camps award patches during the summer for skills, sessions and years attended.
