Scout Sunday and the Scouting anniversary

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8, 1910, and the organization, renamed Scouting America in 2025, marks its anniversary every February. Scouting began in Britain in 1907 with Robert Baden-Powell’s experimental camp on Brownsea Island and spread to the United States within a few years.

Because so many troops and packs are chartered by churches, synagogues and mosques, the anniversary is also celebrated with Scout Sunday, Scout Sabbath and Scout Jumuah. On those days Scouts attend services in uniform, often help lead them, and are recognized by the congregation that sponsors them. Scout Sunday is usually the Sunday before or nearest February 8.

Anniversary month is also a recruiting and recognition season. Units hold anniversary dinners and blue-and-gold banquets, award rank advancements, and celebrate their own founding years. Patches are central to Scouting: uniforms carry unit numbers, council strips and activity patches, and a troop or pack anniversary patch is one of the most common custom designs a unit ever orders.
