About Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the civil rights leader, who was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta and was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis. Efforts to create a holiday began soon after his death. President Ronald Reagan signed the law establishing it on November 2, 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. It falls on the third Monday of January, which in 2027 is January 18.

In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, which asked Americans to mark the day by serving their communities. The federal agency AmeriCorps leads the MLK Day of Service, and every year thousands of projects take place across the country: food drives, park cleanups, school repairs, blood drives and visits to seniors.

Organizing a service project means organizing volunteers, and volunteers like to be thanked. Many schools, congregations, companies and nonprofits give participants a T-shirt, a cap or a patch to mark the day and to make it easy to see who is part of the team.
