About National EMS Week

National EMS Week recognizes the emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency physicians, nurses and dispatchers who provide emergency medical care. It began in 1974, when President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first week to honor EMS practitioners. Today it is held during the third full week of May, which in 2027 runs from May 16 to May 22, and it is led by the American College of Emergency Physicians together with the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Modern EMS in the United States is young. The 1966 report “Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society” found that many accident victims died for lack of care on the way to hospital, and the Highway Safety Act of the same year led to national training standards. The blue six-pointed Star of Life, designed in 1973 for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, became the symbol of EMS.

Services celebrate the week with themed days, awards and community events such as CPR classes. Crew patches, service patches and EMS Week patches are popular gifts and trade items for EMTs and paramedics.
