About the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is held every August in and around Sturgis, South Dakota, at the edge of the Black Hills. It began in 1938, when local motorcycle dealer J.C. “Pappy” Hoel and the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club organized a race and stunt show. Over the decades the rally grew into one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the world.
The rally runs for ten days each August, with rides through the Black Hills and Badlands, concerts, races, vendor rows and bike shows. Hundreds of thousands of riders typically attend, many of them traveling across the country with their clubs and riding groups. Organizers publish each year’s dates on the official rally website.
Patches are part of biker culture. Riders wear rally patches and run pins on vests and jackets, and clubs mark the trip with run patches for members who made the ride. Clubs and groups typically order their run patches in the spring so they arrive before departure.
