About Purple Heart Day

Purple Heart Day, August 7, marks the anniversary of the Badge of Military Merit, which General George Washington created on August 7, 1782, at Newburgh, New York, to recognize meritorious action by soldiers of the Continental Army. Only three soldiers are known to have received it during the Revolutionary War.

The award was revived in 1932, on the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth, as the Purple Heart. It is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded or killed by enemy action, and it is the oldest military award still given to U.S. service members. More than 1.8 million Purple Hearts are estimated to have been awarded.

On Purple Heart Day, communities, veterans’ organizations and chapters of the Military Order of the Purple Heart hold ceremonies honoring recipients. Many towns and counties have also declared themselves Purple Heart Communities. Tribute patches in purple and gold are used at ceremonies and by veterans’ groups.
