The history of St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, marks the traditional date of the death of Saint Patrick, the fifth-century missionary credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. For centuries it was mainly a religious feast in Ireland. In the United States it became a celebration of Irish heritage, with some of the earliest observances recorded in Boston in 1737 and a parade in New York City in 1762.
Waves of Irish immigration in the nineteenth century made the day a public show of community pride. Parades grew in New York, Boston, Chicago, Savannah and many other cities, and in 1962 Chicago began dyeing its river green. The shamrock, which legend says Patrick used to explain the Trinity, became the day’s best-known symbol.
Police and fire departments have a special place in the parades. Many departments have Emerald Societies, fraternal groups of members of Irish descent, and their pipe and drum bands march in uniform. Pub teams, Irish dance schools and running clubs also order shamrock patches for the day.
