The history of Mother’s Day

The American Mother’s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial service for her own mother, the community organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis, at a church in Grafton, West Virginia, in May 1908. Jarvis then campaigned for a national day, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day. In 2027 it is May 9.

The holiday grew quickly into one of the busiest days of the year for flowers, cards and family meals. Anna Jarvis herself later opposed what she saw as its commercialization, but the day has remained a time for families to thank mothers, grandmothers and the many other people who play a mother’s role.
