About Girl Scout Week

Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Juliette Gordon Low, who held the first meeting of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912. Girl Scout Week is celebrated each year in the week that includes March 12, Girl Scouts’ birthday. It traditionally begins with Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath, when members attend services in uniform.

The week overlaps with the end of cookie season. Girl Scouts have sold cookies since 1917, when the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked and sold them in its high school cafeteria. Today the cookie program is the largest girl-led business in the world and teaches goal setting, money management and people skills.

Troops celebrate the week with service projects, birthday parties and ceremonies, and many award fun patches for taking part. Fun patches are worn on the back of a vest or sash and are separate from official badges, which is why troops and service units order custom designs for camps, events and cookie-sale milestones.
