About Employee Appreciation Day

Employee Appreciation Day falls on the first Friday of March, which in 2027 is March 5. It was created in 1995 by the author and management consultant Bob Nelson, whose book “1001 Ways to Reward Employees” argued that recognition from managers matters as much to many employees as pay. His publisher, Workman Publishing, helped promote the first observance.

The day is not an official holiday, but it has become a fixture in many workplaces. Managers use it to thank staff with lunches, notes, small gifts and awards for milestones such as years of service. Human resources teams often tie it to longer recognition programs that run all year.

Recognition research consistently finds that specific, visible recognition works best. Branded items that employees actually wear, such as jackets, caps and bags, are visible every day.
