The history of Presidents Day

The holiday most Americans call Presidents Day is officially Washington’s Birthday. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, and Congress made his birthday a holiday for federal offices in the District of Columbia in 1879, then for all federal offices in 1885. It was the first federal holiday to honor an individual American.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved the holiday to the third Monday of February starting in 1971, so it never falls on Washington’s actual birthday. Because it sits between Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s, February 12, many states and retailers came to call it Presidents Day and treat it as a day to honor all presidents. In 2027 it is February 15.

Schools teach about the presidents in the days around it, communities hold parades and reenactments, and many historical societies and civic groups use it for events. Americana and flag patches are popular for school projects, scout units, historical clubs and Presidents Day sales.
