About Patriot Day

Patriot Day, September 11, remembers the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon and aboard United Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Congress designated the day in December 2001, and in 2009 it was also named a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Among the dead were 343 firefighters of the New York City Fire Department, along with police officers from the New York City Police Department and the Port Authority Police Department and many other first responders. Each year flags are flown at half-staff, moments of silence are observed at the times the planes struck, and ceremonies are held at the National September 11 Memorial, the Pentagon Memorial and the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Fire departments and police departments across the country hold memorial stair climbs, ceremonies and services. Never Forget and tribute patches are worn on station uniforms and at memorial events, and many groups sell them to support first responder and survivor charities.
