About Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, burned for more than a day, killed hundreds of people and destroyed thousands of buildings. On its 40th anniversary in 1911, the Fire Marshals Association of North America began marking the date with a day of fire safety education.

In 1922 the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) began sponsoring a week, and in 1925 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first national Fire Prevention Week. It is the longest-running public health observance in the United States and is held each year in the week that contains October 9. NFPA chooses a new safety theme each year.

Fire departments visit schools, hold open houses and teach families about smoke alarms and escape plans. Children try on helmets, tour engines and leave with stickers, plastic helmets and, increasingly, a junior firefighter patch. Departments order these giveaways in bulk in late summer.
