New Year: dated patches and the new budget cycle

New Year’s Day, January 1, has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870. Celebrating the year’s start on January 1 goes back to the Roman calendar reform under Julius Caesar in 46 BCE, and was restored across most of Europe with the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century.

For many organizations the new year is also a practical deadline. Clubs elect new officers, teams start a new season, schools begin a new semester, and many businesses and public agencies open a new budget year or a new quarter. That is when dated items are refreshed: membership cards, uniforms, rockers and patches that carry the year.

Ordering for January means ordering in November and early December. Production takes about two weeks plus shipping, and the holidays shorten the calendar at both ends, so groups that want 2027 patches in hand for their first meeting or first game of the year usually place orders before the holiday break.
