The history of Labor Day
Labor Day honors the American labor movement and the contributions of workers. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union, when thousands of workers marched from City Hall to Union Square. Other cities and states followed, and Oregon became the first state to make it a legal holiday in 1887.
Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, when President Grover Cleveland signed the law, weeks after the Pullman strike. It is held on the first Monday of September, which in 2027 is September 6, and for many Americans it marks the unofficial end of summer and the start of the school year.
Union locals, trades and building councils still hold parades and picnics, and many members wear their local’s colors. Union local and trade patches, apprenticeship patches and years-of-membership patches are popular for jackets, hard-hat bags and vests.
