The history of Hanukkah
Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, lasts eight nights and begins on the 25th of the Hebrew month of Kislev. In 2026 it begins at sundown on Friday, December 4. The name means "dedication" in Hebrew.
The festival recalls the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem around 164 BCE. The Seleucid king Antiochus IV had banned Jewish practice and desecrated the Temple, and a revolt led by the Maccabees, the family of the priest Mattathias and his son Judah, retook Jerusalem. The books of Maccabees describe an eight-day celebration when the Temple was restored. The Talmud adds the tradition that one day’s supply of pure oil kept the Temple lamp burning for eight days.
Families light a hanukkiah, a nine-branched menorah, adding one candle each night with a helper candle called the shamash, and often place it where it can be seen from the street. Fried foods such as latkes and sufganiyot recall the oil, and children play dreidel, a spinning top marked with four Hebrew letters. Synagogues, schools and Jewish community centers hold public candle lightings and parties throughout the eight nights.
