The history of Christmas in America

Christmas is celebrated on December 25 and marks the birth of Jesus for Christians around the world. In the United States it has been a federal holiday since 1870, when Congress made it one of the first national holidays together with New Year’s Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

In 2026 Christmas Day falls on a Friday. Many American traditions took their modern form in the nineteenth century: the decorated Christmas tree, popularized in the United States by German immigrants; Santa Claus, shaped by the 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and later illustrations; and the exchange of cards and gifts within families, workplaces and communities.

The season is also a peak time for giving to teams and groups. Coaches give gifts to players, scout leaders to their troops, managers to their staff and clubs to their members, and many of those gifts are things people wear. Stockings, ornaments and gift tags are also traditional places for small personalized items, which is why patches show up on so many handmade Christmas gifts.
