Opening day of youth baseball and softball

Organized youth baseball took its modern shape in 1939, when Carl Stotz founded Little League Baseball in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with three teams sponsored by local businesses. The program grew rapidly after World War II and now includes softball and players around the world. The Little League World Series has been played in South Williamsport every August since 1947.

Alongside Little League, many towns run leagues through Babe Ruth League, Dixie, PONY, USSSA and local recreation departments. Most spring seasons in the United States begin in late March or early April, after winter tryouts, drafts and team assignments. Opening day is a community event: teams parade in uniform, a local official throws the first pitch and families crowd the stands.

Patches are a long tradition in youth baseball. Players wear league and sponsor patches on their sleeves, trade pin-style and patch items at tournaments, and receive patches for all-star selection and championships. Leagues need those patches in hand before opening day, which means ordering in February or early March.
