About FDIC International

FDIC International, the Fire Department Instructors Conference, is one of the oldest and largest training conferences in the fire service. It began in the 1920s as a gathering of fire service instructors and is held every April in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is produced by the publishers of Fire Engineering magazine.

The week combines classroom sessions, hands-on training evolutions at sites around the city and a large exhibit hall with apparatus, tools, protective equipment and services from hundreds of companies. Firefighters, company officers and chiefs from career, volunteer and combination departments attend from across North America and beyond, and many bring their crews.

Patch trading is a lively part of the conference. Firefighters bring their own department patches to trade, collectors fill binders, and exhibitors who hand out a good patch at their booth get remembered. Departments that attend often order trade patches before the trip, and companies use patches as giveaways that firefighters keep.
