Are custom patches washable and how do I care for them?
Embroidered patches are fully machine washable when sewn on; iron-on patches should be washed cold inside-out to preserve the adhesive bond.
Embroidered patches, once properly attached, are very durable in the wash. Sewn-on patches can be machine washed and dried at normal settings indefinitely without issue - the embroidery thread is colorfast and the twill backing is stable. If thread colors fade over time with repeated washing, it's usually the garment's other colors fading to match rather than the thread itself.
Iron-on patches are more sensitive to laundering. The heat-activated adhesive that bonds the patch to the garment can weaken over time with hot water washing and high-heat drying. For iron-on patches you want to keep long-term, wash the garment inside-out in cold water and tumble dry on low or air dry. If the edges start to lift, a quick re-press with an iron or heat press reactivates the adhesive and re-bonds the patch.
The most robust attachment for frequently washed items - uniforms, athletic gear, work clothes - is always sew-on, optionally reinforced with iron-on adhesive backing as a positioning aid before sewing. The combination of adhesive hold and stitching provides a bond that will outlast the garment itself.
PVC patches are inherently waterproof and weather-resistant. They can be submerged, dried, and laundered without any risk to the patch itself. The limiting factor is the attachment method - a Velcro-backed PVC patch on an item that gets washed regularly should be removed before washing to keep the Velcro clean and functional.
For patches on dry-clean-only garments, consult your dry cleaner about patch compatibility. Most dry cleaning processes are safe for embroidered patches, but some solvents can affect certain adhesive backings.
