The history of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving traces to the autumn of 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and members of the Wampanoag people shared a harvest feast that lasted about three days. Days of thanksgiving were common in the colonies and the early republic, but for two centuries there was no fixed national date.
That changed after a long campaign by the magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale, who wrote to presidents and officials for years asking for a national holiday. On October 3, 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving for the last Thursday of November, and presidents issued yearly proclamations after that.
In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday a week earlier to lengthen the holiday shopping season, which caused confusion as states chose different dates. Congress settled it with a joint resolution that Roosevelt signed on December 26, 1941, fixing Thanksgiving as a federal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that is November 26.
Today Thanksgiving is one of the most traveled holidays in the United States, built around family meals, parades, football games, food drives and Turkey Trot races.
