About National First Responders Day

National First Responders Day is observed in the United States on October 28. On August 3, 2017, the U.S. Senate passed a concurrent resolution supporting October 28 as “Honoring the Nation’s First Responders Day”, to recognize the professional and volunteer police officers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics who keep communities safe. The family of MIT police officer Sean Collier, killed after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, advocated for it. Congress passed a resolution again in 2019, and many cities, counties and agencies now mark the day with proclamations.

In 2026 the day falls on a Wednesday. It is not a federal holiday, so most observances are local: departments hold open houses and ceremonies, schools and businesses deliver meals and thank-you cards to stations, and communities recognize individual responders for rescues and long service.

The day sits alongside other recognition dates in the calendar, such as National Police Week in May, International Firefighters’ Day on May 4, National EMS Week in May and National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in April. First Responders Day is the one that brings all of these groups together, which is why many thank-you items made for it show a combined or unity design rather than a single service.
