Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in America, and it maintains strong traditions around achievement recognition. Varsity letters, tournament medals, and qualifying patches are part of the culture — and custom patches play a central role.
Types of Wrestling Patches
Varsity award patches (often incorporated into the letter jacket system), tournament qualifying patches, state championship patches, team camp patches, and senior recognition patches are the most common in wrestling programs.
Traditional Design Elements
Wrestling singlet silhouettes, crossed arms in a handshake grip, the iconic wrestling headgear, and the school mascot are all strong visual elements. Bold typography for the school name and year is critical. Wrestling patches tend to be more graphic and powerful-looking than patches for other sports — the sport's competitive intensity should be reflected in the design.
Varsity Letter Integration
For programs that award varsity letters on letter jackets, wrestling patches typically sit alongside or below the main letter. These patches are usually 2" to 3" to complement rather than dominate the letter. Gold and black, or the school's official colors, are standard.
Tournament Host Patches
High school wrestling programs that host invitationals often create host tournament patches — given to all participating teams and wrestlers. These create goodwill and are traded across programs, spreading awareness of the host school's program. Budget for 20% more than expected participant count, as extras go quickly.
